Reacting to Midnights ~ In Which I’m Like Four Months Late But It’s Just Too Good to Not

Um.

I have become a Swiftie on accident.

It was never my intention to be more than a casual Taylor Swift fan. I listened to a couple songs and I enjoyed a couple songs and then Liesl was like “You should listen to evermore and folklore because they’re pure poetry” and I was like “Whatever you say queen” and then I listened to them and I was like “Holy crap” and then I listened to Midnights of my own volition and I haven’t been able to stop listening to it since. And I have a lot of opinions about it so I’m writing a post and making you all read my opinions. Well, you’re more than welcome to click away BUT DON’T. EVERY WORD THAT COMES OUT OF MY MOUTH IS IMPORTANT.

*serious nod*

*sighhhhh* I’ll never forgive you for this, Liesl.

Anyways, basically how I did this is I looked up the Midnights Wikipedia page and then searched each song up on YouTube alongside the word “clean” and if there was a clean version, that popped up and, if not, I listened to the normal version. So I avoided swear words mostly. (Also the word sexy but I wasn’t anticipating that LOL) Idk if anyone cares but yeah.

Lavender Haze

I’ve been under scrutiny // You handle it beautifully

This one’s fun. I like the word play. Definitely not my favorite and it probably won’t end up in my playlist but it is catchy. And a pretty good start to the album.

Maroon

And I lost you // The one I was dancin’ with // In New York, no shoes // Looked up at the sky and it was maroon

The harmonies are gorgeous. I love this one. And the story it tells is beautiful.

Anti-Hero

I’ll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror // It must be exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero

Hmm. This one is painfully relatable. It’s been memed to death on TikTok but I still really like it. I usually don’t like the songs that I hear over and over and OVER on the internet but this one is still good. And it has a lot of backstory and creativity.

Snow on the Beach

Life is emotionally abusive // And time can’t stop me quite like you did // And my flight was awful, thanks for asking // I’m unglued, thanks to you

This one gives me some serious Christmas song vibes. Maybe that’s what she was going for LOL Also where is Lana Del Ray? I can’t hear her on the track at all. The chorus is lovely, though, and the harmonies are heavenly.

You’re on Your Own, Kid

There were pages turned with the bridges burned // Everything you lose is a step you take // So make the friendship bracelets // Take the moment and taste it // You’ve got no reason to be afraid

The lyrics are so angelic. I love this one. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the title but it’s definitely not what I had in mind.

Midnight Rain

My boy was a montage // A slow-motion, love potion

This one is. . . . weird. I don’t hate it, it’s just weird. Also I feel bad for that poor boy in the song.

Question…?

‘Cause I don’t remember who I was // Before you painted all my nights // A color I’ve searched for since

This sounds like the kind of song I would write and be super proud of. The beat is great, although good grief they had to censor a lot. Not sure how I feel about the lyrics. I think I have mixed feelings about this one.

Vigilante

Sometimes I wonder which one will be your last lie // They say looks can kill and I might try

I like listening to music with painful amounts of bass. This one fits the bill. This is the song you listen to when you’re about to slash your ex’s tires. Also, the line “I don’t start it but I can tell you how it ends” makes me think of Marie from The Aristocats.

I do have an issue with the lyrics. She should have said “your last life” instead “your last lie”. It would have tied the next line in a little better. But anyways.

Bejeweled

Familiarity breeds contempt // Don’t put me in the basement // When I want the penthouse of your heart

This one’s fun! Also the “NICE!!” sounds like a video game soundbite LOL

Labyrinth

I thought the plane was goin’ down // How’d you turn it right around?

Why. Is the synth. So weird? It sounds like there’s a cat laying on the keys. I don’t know if I can get behind this one.

Karma

Sweet like honey, karma is a cat // Purring in my lap ’cause it loves me

I like all the metaphors she has in the chorus, although, when I first heard “karma is a cat,” I imagined karma sarcastically knocking things off of Taylor’s shelves. Or rather, Taylor’s ex’s shelves. Maybe karma is the cat laying on the synthesizer in the previous song. *shrug* You never know.

Sweet Nothing

They said the end is coming // Everyone’s up to something // I find myself running home to your sweet nothings

This one feels so different from all the other songs. Almost. . . . out of place. Maybe it’s because it’s towards the end of the album. Songs near the end always feel boring and different to me. Not sure why.

Mastermind

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail // Strategy sets the scene for the tale

Kind of a repeating theme in Taylor’s songs and the beginning sounds like the music for a big tech commercial. But the lyric video is beautiful.

The Great War

My hand was the one you reached for // All throughout the Great War

I. LOVE. This one. The story, the beat, the melody. It’s GORGEOUS. I’ve been listening to it non-stop. And it reminds me of my OTP hehe.

Bigger Than the Whole Sky

I’m never gonna meet // What could’ve been, would’ve been // What should’ve been you

This one makes me sad. I heard someone say that it’s about a miscarriage and I like that better than a breakup. And it makes more sense. But whether it’s about a miscarriage or what, I think this song makes more sense in the context of death.

Paris

I’m so in love that I might stop breathing // Drew a map on your bedroom ceiling

The vibes are immaculate. *nodnod*

High Infidelity

You know there’s many different ways that you can kill the one you love // The slowest way is never loving them enough

I like this one. Not enough to put it in my playlist but it is still very nice. And I really like that little prechorus//bridge thing. It’s quite lovely.

Glitch

It must be counterfeit // I think there’s been a glitch

Not sure how I feel about this one. It’s kinda like Midnight Rain. Not as weird, but I’m just as unsure. It is a mood though.

Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve

Living for the thrill of hitting you where it hurts // Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first

I love this one too. It might beat out The Great War for my favorite song. It’s so beautiful. And so sad. I can almost feel her pain.

Dear Reader

No one sees when you lose // When you’re playing solitaire

The autotune is funky but I quite like the lyric video. Although, half the time, I have no idea what she’s talking about.

Hits Different

I heard your key turn in the door down the hallway // Is that your key in the door? // Is it okay? Is it you? // Or have they come to take me away?

This song is what hits different. *slaps knee*

That was

That was a terrible joke I’m sorry.

It is a really catchy song though. I get it stuck in my head all the time.

Andddd that’s all! Overall, I really really like this album. It’s different than the other Taylor Swift songs I’ve heard but it’s a good different. And I’m feeling very inspired right now. I may write an album of my own.

Hmm……

Timeeeee to Recapppp Februaryyyyy ~ In Which I’m Writing This Not Because I Just Love Recapping Months But Because I Have to Get This Out of the Way to Write a DIFFERENT Post Just Kidding I LOVE Recapping the Months!!! Gotcha!!

Ittttt is no longerrrrrr Februaryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Also why do scholarship applications have to be so thorough? It’s like, they need my name, my address, my email address, my SSN, my tax information, my firstborn child, my SECONDborn child, my left fourth finger, two of my toes, my dad’s wedding band, my entire life story, and my phone number. Ridiculous!! I was fine until you asked for my phone number! What, are you gonna call me or something?? Sorry, I’d rather pay full price for college than talk on the phone. *scoffs*

February Memories

A lot happened in February, despite it being the shortest month of the year, which makes me wonder what the longer months have in store. But we’re not here to wonder about the future, we’re here to laugh at the past!!

Let’s start with the work mishaps. Because there’s always some of those.

1. I read a lot because there was nothing else to do.

2. I got a Claire’s shirt and I wore it and it was peak fashion *strikes pose*

3. I sang the Solfege scale forward and backward because my boss requested it and she was quite impressed because she can’t even sing it forward. So being a singer has its perks 👍

4. I spent four hours checking the prices on two earring trees and I think that means that Claire’s sells too many earrings.

5. The little girl that told me to get turquoise braces in the last post stopped by and I’d gotten turquoise braces by then, so I showed her and she was VERY thrilled.

6. I will never get tired of when teenage boys come into Claire’s. These three highschool seniors came in to get their ears pierced and they were terrified, so terrified in fact, that they requested we do a double piercing, which means that we pierce both ears at the same time. After they got their ears pierced, they all agreed that it was not nearly as bad as they thought it was going to be.

7. Another friend of those three boys came in later that day and got his ears pierced. He did not do a double piercing and he didn’t even flinch when the holes were made. He promised us he would rub that in his friends’ faces. I love teenage boys.

8. This brother and sister duo came in and my manager managed to snucker them into buying more things, much to their chagrin, and we had a lovely conversation about cars and car crashes. They were quite nice. The sister was very fairy-like. And her name was Willow! I think a fairy came and shopped at Claire’s.

9. We hired a new girl and she’s very petite. I stood up next to her and her eyes widened. ‘Twas comical.

10. I pierced seven ears one Saturday and somewhere out there, there’s a one-year-old, a five-month-old, and a four-year-old seeking my blood. So that’s fun!

I swear, I am never going to get tired of this job.

Oh guys. I did something I’m not proud of. I got into a debate with some people in the YouTube comments. I know I know, that was my own fault. We were debating about religion and stuff and everyone was surprisingly polite. I only got sworn at once. The debate is over (despite some people trying to pettily revive it) and I feel quite secure in my faith. I’m grateful to God for giving me the chance to witness and I’m proud of myself for not losing my temper. But I have learned my lesson and I will not get into anymore online debates heh.

We rearranged my sisters’ room and I kinda like it and maybe want it for myself.

Oh, I discovered that twin braids look really good on me and I’ve been wearing them non-stop. And they also give me the excuse to not brush my hair hehe

My sister started violin lessons and I have faith that, soon enough, she’ll be up there with Paganini and Ling-Ling practicing forty hours a day. And if none of you get that reference, shame on you.

I went on a mad stationery hoarding spree and I am now rich in stationery and very very broke.

Oh dude, I listened to Midnights and I really really like it and I also discovered EPIC: The Musical and I am so freaking obsessed with both. I’ve been listening to and writing a lot of music lately. My recent jam sessions have heavy Taylor Swift vibes and I’m honestly not mad.

OH MY GOSH HOW COULD I FORGET

I FINISHED MY VERY FIRST 50K WORK NOVEL!!!!!!

My NaNo novel and my baby has been completed! My Alpha readers are going over it and tearing it apart making suggestions. I’m so so so SO happy!!! I can’t believe I finally wrote a 50,000 word novel! I feel so ACCOMPLISHED!!

I made a flower crown and I felt like a fairy. February had a strange fairy theme to it, I think.

I killed a cockroach without having a panic attack for the first time in a long time and I’m really proud of that guys. I didn’t have the courage to scrape him off the floor so I just left him there for someone else to clean up. But I killed him and that’s what’s important.

My brother got a job and then got fired within two weeks. It was sad too because he really enjoyed it. But they’re open to rehiring him, he just has to get better at what he was doing.

Our dog was hit by a car and died. I found out after I got home from work and yeah, we’re puppy-less now. *sadz* But I’m not too upset. He was just a dog. Animals are here for a bit and then they die. Some sooner than others. He was a good doggo.

I went over to my best friend’s house for the first time and we toured Walmart and drove around and hunted flags and it was fun!

I started recording my audition songs and then I got sick so yeah. I only have one song left to record and I’m just waiting for my voice to get back to normal. Thankfully, my college extended the submission deadline so I have a little bit of extra time. I cannot WAIT to be DONE with this.

February Book Reviews

I only read three books this month but February was a short month so maybe that has something to do with it.

Unraveling by Sara Ella

This is the second book in the Unbreaking trilogy and it continues the story of Eliyana Ember. El has found out how important she is to saving the world and, after being separated from the man her life is connected to, she embarks on a journey to find him and grow their connection. She doesn’t know that another man, the one that loves her just as deeply as the first, is seeking to ruin their relationship.

THIS. BOOK. RUINED ME. Sara Ella’s storytelling will never seize to amaze and the way she furthered El’s story was so gripping and amazing. I will never stop recommending this series.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Unbreakable by Sara Ella

El’s story comes to a beautiful end as she seeks the strange part of her that she senses is missing. She’s so sure he’s the one she’s meant to be with but a strange sense of rage consumes her mind and soul when she thinks of another. Where did that rage come from? And what if she’s with the wrong man? Throw in a strange time travel adventure and you have the perfect recipe for disaster.

This book is a perfect finale. Not only does Sara Ella kill off a character, but she LEAVES HIM DEAD!!!! I love it when authors don’t resurrect their characters because I feel like too many people kill off a character for shock factor and then resurrect him again because they missed him. So I’m glad she left him dead. And the way El’s relationship with her sister grew was so wonderful.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The Girl Who Could See by Kara Swanson

Fern Johnson’s imaginary friend never left. He’s always there, haunting her every move and teasing her with awful practical jokes that cause her to float in and out of jobs. All Fern wants is for him to go away. Until she realizes what exactly he was trying to warn her of. Now Fern is racing against the clock to close a tear between two worlds and save everyone she loves.

This book was pretty good. Definitely not the best thing I’ve ever read but the concept is interesting and it held my attention so I think that’s all I need to ask from a book LOL

Rating: 3 out of 5.
