Um.
I have become a Swiftie on accident.
It was never my intention to be more than a casual Taylor Swift fan. I listened to a couple songs and I enjoyed a couple songs and then Liesl was like “You should listen to evermore and folklore because they’re pure poetry” and I was like “Whatever you say queen” and then I listened to them and I was like “Holy crap” and then I listened to Midnights of my own volition and I haven’t been able to stop listening to it since. And I have a lot of opinions about it so I’m writing a post and making you all read my opinions. Well, you’re more than welcome to click away BUT DON’T. EVERY WORD THAT COMES OUT OF MY MOUTH IS IMPORTANT.
*serious nod*
*sighhhhh* I’ll never forgive you for this, Liesl.
Anyways, basically how I did this is I looked up the Midnights Wikipedia page and then searched each song up on YouTube alongside the word “clean” and if there was a clean version, that popped up and, if not, I listened to the normal version. So I avoided swear words mostly. (Also the word sexy but I wasn’t anticipating that LOL) Idk if anyone cares but yeah.
Lavender Haze
I’ve been under scrutiny // You handle it beautifully
This one’s fun. I like the word play. Definitely not my favorite and it probably won’t end up in my playlist but it is catchy. And a pretty good start to the album.
Maroon
And I lost you // The one I was dancin’ with // In New York, no shoes // Looked up at the sky and it was maroon
The harmonies are gorgeous. I love this one. And the story it tells is beautiful.
Anti-Hero
I’ll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror // It must be exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero
Hmm. This one is painfully relatable. It’s been memed to death on TikTok but I still really like it. I usually don’t like the songs that I hear over and over and OVER on the internet but this one is still good. And it has a lot of backstory and creativity.
Snow on the Beach
Life is emotionally abusive // And time can’t stop me quite like you did // And my flight was awful, thanks for asking // I’m unglued, thanks to you
This one gives me some serious Christmas song vibes. Maybe that’s what she was going for LOL Also where is Lana Del Ray? I can’t hear her on the track at all. The chorus is lovely, though, and the harmonies are heavenly.
You’re on Your Own, Kid
There were pages turned with the bridges burned // Everything you lose is a step you take // So make the friendship bracelets // Take the moment and taste it // You’ve got no reason to be afraid
The lyrics are so angelic. I love this one. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the title but it’s definitely not what I had in mind.
Midnight Rain
My boy was a montage // A slow-motion, love potion
This one is. . . . weird. I don’t hate it, it’s just weird. Also I feel bad for that poor boy in the song.
Question…?
‘Cause I don’t remember who I was // Before you painted all my nights // A color I’ve searched for since
This sounds like the kind of song I would write and be super proud of. The beat is great, although good grief they had to censor a lot. Not sure how I feel about the lyrics. I think I have mixed feelings about this one.
Vigilante
Sometimes I wonder which one will be your last lie // They say looks can kill and I might try
I like listening to music with painful amounts of bass. This one fits the bill. This is the song you listen to when you’re about to slash your ex’s tires. Also, the line “I don’t start it but I can tell you how it ends” makes me think of Marie from The Aristocats.
I do have an issue with the lyrics. She should have said “your last life” instead “your last lie”. It would have tied the next line in a little better. But anyways.
Bejeweled
Familiarity breeds contempt // Don’t put me in the basement // When I want the penthouse of your heart
This one’s fun! Also the “NICE!!” sounds like a video game soundbite LOL
Labyrinth
I thought the plane was goin’ down // How’d you turn it right around?
Why. Is the synth. So weird? It sounds like there’s a cat laying on the keys. I don’t know if I can get behind this one.
Karma
Sweet like honey, karma is a cat // Purring in my lap ’cause it loves me
I like all the metaphors she has in the chorus, although, when I first heard “karma is a cat,” I imagined karma sarcastically knocking things off of Taylor’s shelves. Or rather, Taylor’s ex’s shelves. Maybe karma is the cat laying on the synthesizer in the previous song. *shrug* You never know.
Sweet Nothing
They said the end is coming // Everyone’s up to something // I find myself running home to your sweet nothings
This one feels so different from all the other songs. Almost. . . . out of place. Maybe it’s because it’s towards the end of the album. Songs near the end always feel boring and different to me. Not sure why.
Mastermind
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail // Strategy sets the scene for the tale
Kind of a repeating theme in Taylor’s songs and the beginning sounds like the music for a big tech commercial. But the lyric video is beautiful.
The Great War
My hand was the one you reached for // All throughout the Great War
I. LOVE. This one. The story, the beat, the melody. It’s GORGEOUS. I’ve been listening to it non-stop. And it reminds me of my OTP hehe.
Bigger Than the Whole Sky
I’m never gonna meet // What could’ve been, would’ve been // What should’ve been you
This one makes me sad. I heard someone say that it’s about a miscarriage and I like that better than a breakup. And it makes more sense. But whether it’s about a miscarriage or what, I think this song makes more sense in the context of death.
Paris
I’m so in love that I might stop breathing // Drew a map on your bedroom ceiling
The vibes are immaculate. *nodnod*
High Infidelity
You know there’s many different ways that you can kill the one you love // The slowest way is never loving them enough
I like this one. Not enough to put it in my playlist but it is still very nice. And I really like that little prechorus//bridge thing. It’s quite lovely.
Glitch
It must be counterfeit // I think there’s been a glitch
Not sure how I feel about this one. It’s kinda like Midnight Rain. Not as weird, but I’m just as unsure. It is a mood though.
Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve
Living for the thrill of hitting you where it hurts // Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first
I love this one too. It might beat out The Great War for my favorite song. It’s so beautiful. And so sad. I can almost feel her pain.
Dear Reader
No one sees when you lose // When you’re playing solitaire
The autotune is funky but I quite like the lyric video. Although, half the time, I have no idea what she’s talking about.
Hits Different
I heard your key turn in the door down the hallway // Is that your key in the door? // Is it okay? Is it you? // Or have they come to take me away?
This song is what hits different. *slaps knee*
…
That was
That was a terrible joke I’m sorry.
It is a really catchy song though. I get it stuck in my head all the time.
Andddd that’s all! Overall, I really really like this album. It’s different than the other Taylor Swift songs I’ve heard but it’s a good different. And I’m feeling very inspired right now. I may write an album of my own.
Hmm……
